Inanunsyo ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) nitong Martes, Mayo 25 na kasalukuyan na ang pakikipagpulong nila sa ibang ahensya kaugnay ng pagpapagawa ng pasilidad para sa kauna-unahang virology institute ng bansa na itatayo sa Tarlac sa susunod na dalawang taon.

Naglaan na ng limang ektaryang lupain ang Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) para sa gagawing Virology Institute of the Philippines (VIP).

“Nakikipag-usap na ang DOST sa BCDA at DPWH para sa lupa… para next year maumpisahan na ‘yung construction,” pahayag ni DOST Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara.

Dagdag pa niya, “[It will take] about 2 years to build that building so end of 2023, 2024 nakabukas na ‘yung building.”

Magkakaroon ang pasilidad ng biosafety laboratories na mayroong “maximum containment level” na anila’y unang beses na magkakaroon ang bansa.

Bukod pa rito, mayroon ding animal house at greenhouse para sa mga animal at plant virus research.

Ayon sa Department of Budget and Management, 50 milyon ang inilaan para sa disenyo ng pasilidad at karagdagang 284 milyon para naman sa anim na paunang proyekto ng VIP.

Ilan sa mga proyektong ito ang pag-aaral kaugnay sa animal viruses na maaaring makahawa sa mga tao, paggamit ng antigenic peptides bilang potensyal na COVID-19 vaccine, at mabilisang pagtukoy sa African Swine Fever virus.

Nauna na ring ibinahagi ng DOST na ilang Pilipinong virologist na rin mula sa ibang bansa ang nagpahayag na umuwi ng bansa upang magtrabaho sa VIP.

Sa kasalukuyan, hinihintay na lamang ng DOST na maipasa ng Kongreso ang batas na maglalaan ng taunang pondo para sa operasyon ng naturang pasilidad.
